Local Authors Inspire Us

Thank you for considering Middleburg Books to help celebrate your work! Some things to consider.

Is your book on Bookshop.org?

Our initial step in consigning books with local authors is to include them on our Bookshop.org homepage so customers can support the author and our bookshop. If the book sells consistently on Bookshop.org for six months, we then consider carrying the title our shelves.

Middleburg Books Celebrates Local Authors

Consignment Policy:

To be eligible for consignment at Middleburg Books, authors must be a Friend of Middleburg Books (Three-Year) — currently $115.

  • We accept books only from authors living in or around Middleburg. Keep in mind that we are a tourist destination so books written on the town or county’s relevant history tend to attract our customers.

  • All books must have a spine with both the title and author clearly printed.

  • Authors receive 55 percent of each sale, while Middleburg Books retains 45 percent.

  • Consigned books are shelved in the appropriate section of the shop. Please note that table or wall displays are not guaranteed.

  • We stock a maximum of two copies of each consigned title. As books sell, we’ll reach out to request a restock.

  • Each consignment contract runs for six months. At the end of that period, we’ll review sales and determine whether to renew the agreement. All decisions regarding renewal are made at the discretion of the shop and are final.

  • At the six-month mark, we’ll calculate royalties:

    • If your book earned $50 or more, we’ll issue a check.

    • If earnings are under $50 and your contract is not renewed, we’ll issue a store credit gift card.

    • If your contract is renewed, any balance under $50 rolls into the next quarter.

  • If a consignment contract is not renewed, authors have two weeks to pick up remaining books. After one month, any unclaimed copies may be donated.

  • Please note: Middleburg Books is not responsible for loss due to theft or normal wear and tear on consigned books.

Event Support:

We’re honored by the many requests we receive for in-store book events by our local authors, but we’ve had to make the difficult decision at this time not to host them. As a small shop with a tiny but mighty team and limited space, we’ve found that we’re best able to serve our readers and community by focusing our energy on the day-to-day magic of the shop.

That said, we’re happy to support local authors at off-site events, when possible. If you’re planning a book event at another venue and would like us to provide bookselling, we’d love to hear from you! We do ask that you expect to sell a minimum of 20 books.
